If I remember correctly, Captain Kittinger went supersonic shortly after exiting the gondola of the helium filled balloon he jumped from. I'm not trying to take anything away from Luigi's incredible speed and impeccable form, but I believe this needs to be looked into before this is claimed as a record. Captain Kittinger went on to become a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force before he retired. I have met him twice, and he is a truly exceptional person. Just try to imagine the courage it took for him to step out of that gondola near the edge of space. Nobody had ever attempted anything like it. He had to wear a full pressure suit, just like the first astronauts wore in space, due to the low air pressure at such a high altitude. He achieved his freefall speed while wearing a drag chute of, I think, 8 feet diameter to keep him stable. There wasn't enough air at that altitude to work with. Just to put his jump into perspective, nobody was even jumping square canopies yet when he made this incredible jump.

Did this break Joe Kittinger’s freefall speed record when he jumped from over 100,000 feet?
