Friday Freakout: 3-In-1 Parachute Wrap, Spin And Ejection

It’s not too often you get a 3-in-1 parachute malfunction. It starts off with two guys entangled in lines. Then one of them puts their canopy on spin cycle. And just as they untangle from the mess, he cuts away, ejecting himself back into freefall — which, I must admit, kinda looks like fun considering the situation they were just in. But not to worry, he packed an extra large pink clamshell instead of a reserve and lands safely.

Getting a leg wrapped up in your riser during deployment is definitely up there on the “ooooohhh fuuuucckk” list. Lets just say that the six-hundred-and-something square feet of trailing fabric probably wasn’t making this guy feel all warm and fuzzy inside — but a clean pair of underwear sure would.

Man, you can never have too much nylon! Too right! And not only does he survive being wrapped up in three canopies (including his reserve), but he steers that mess with his right hand and his left foot to land safely in a field. True story. What a BADASS!

Skydiving is generally a happy place of fresh air, freedom, and fun. Except for the odd occasion when you’re plummeting towards the ground entangled in your pilot chute with a shit-ton of lines everywhere. Then the only thing coursing through your veins is fear, and the only thing running through your mind is “Fuuuuuck!”

Friday Freakout: Paratrooper Survives 50-Foot Cutaway!!!

Talk about a close call. This has to be one of the LOWEST cutaways I’ve ever seen. Two paratroopers get wrapped up and one of them chops his main less than 50 feet (give or take) above the ground, and luckily his reserve opens 15 feet before impact. Pardon me while I change my underwear!

Doing CRW (canopy relative work) in clouds probably wasn’t the wisest decision these two skydivers ever made. It’s a bit like doing a low hook turn blindfolded. In fact, thinking about it, that may even be safer.

What starts out as a solid 4-stack CRW (canopy relative work) rotation by Team Hypoxia quickly turns into four good friends trying to kill each other in another wild parachute wrap. Surprisingly, this mess only resulted in one cutaway.

Friday Freakout: Surprise!… Canopy Collision

Losing your helmet in freefall is never fun (watch closely at the 0:03 mark). Neither is a canopy collision/wrap immediately after dumping your main. This video is from the good ‘ol days — 1989 — back when, apparently, tracking away at break-off was only a suggestion. Oh well, nice video.
