“Fuckin’ hell, that was close. Closest I’ve ever come.” Spoken like a true Aussie ninja, talkin’ all casual as his end cells nearly hit the trees. This was Chris ‘Douggs’ McDougall’s first serious off-heading opening after 15 years and over 2,600 BASE jumps. If this was any closer, it would’ve ended up as a proper Friday Freakout cliff strike, but Douggs handled it like the pro that he is. But what else would ya expect – he’s from ‘Straya!

Friday Freakout: Sled BASE Jump Almost Ends In Disaster

Instead of a tried and true ski-BASE exit, Dennis Ohlsen opted to ride a sled off the edge of a snowy cliff. Sure, a fun idea in theory… until your sled gets stuck on the edge, sending you off said cliff with almost no forward speed. Dennis comes incredibly close to the cliff in his first few seconds of freefall, but luckily he escapes without a scratch.

Seeing as this is a BASE jump, it’s a pretty short jump and canopy ride. But try telling that to the BASE jumper after bashing himself into a wall not once, but TWICE! That shit’s gotta hurt. Ouch. Not something we advise trying — ever. But good on ‘em for keeping his cool and (we hope) landing safely.

Friday Freakout: 1930s Parachute “Test” Off Cliff

Apparently the role of a parachute test pilot in the 1930s was a lot more hardcore/crazy than it is today. It looks like cliff strikes and near certain death was part of the job description back then. “If it lets you down, it’ll be a great success. If not, you get a new parachute absolutely free!” That’s a good deal, right? There’s also some bonus footage of the “air taxi” invention, which didn’t really take off (no pun intended). Wouldn’t you rather skydive into the office instead of driving or taking the bus?

Have you ever had a cliff strike while BASE jumping, then flared out of full brakes straight into jagged rocks, and amazingly landed safely without a scratch? I didn’t think so. Not many people have. Then again, not many BASE jumpers plan on hucking a half gainer/side roll with a half twist pitch like this guy. He’s one lucky dude!

This is the unofficial how-to video for “canopy proximity flying.” I’m not entirely sure if this was a wingsuit malfunction or a pilot error, but it turns into a shit show real quick. An unstable deployment. Nasty line twists. Avoiding a cliff strike by inches. Oh, and a vuvuzela horn blowing at 0:53. This guy’s lucky to be alive. Next time, he might want to wait until he lands before busting out the vuvuzela.

Friday Freakout: Wingsuit Strikes Cliff

Considering the alternatives, this BASE jumper couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. Well, aside from not hitting the cliff at all. If you’re going to walk, err, fly away from a cliff strike without a scratch, the least you can do is pack your rig while waiting for air rescue and do a heli jump once they pick you up! Lol. Unfortunately this other BASE jumping cliff strike wasn’t as lucky.

We all make mistakes, and Norwegian BASE jumper Hans Lange is no different. Despite dumping too close to the cliff, striking the cliff, breaking his leg and getting stuck in a tree, Hans was a pretty good sport about the whole thing; even poking fun at himself… “What an imbecile!”
