Friday Freakout: Double Tandem Collision Near Miss

Here’s something you don’t see every day (wait for it): a tandem collision near miss with one tandem in freefall and the other under canopy. Another few seconds before deploying and this might have been a tandem sandwich — or at least a very close flyby.

When you’re trying to get separation before you pull, don’t do this! Short of hitting the other parachute in freefall (like this guy), it doesn’t get much closer than this. Thanks to Morgan Mackay at Vertical Films for sending us the video of his crazy close call — I’m glad this ended well for you mate. It can never hurt to get plenty of separation and keep an eye out for other jumpers :)

Sure, it’s funny to watch, but some of these closing speeds are scary, not to mention the grand finale at the 2:25 mark. Friday Freakout: Where’s Waldo? Near Mid-Air Collision

Soooo, a skydiver in this group fell below the formation and instead of getting back up to the formation or watching them until break-off, he just decided to track off in a random direction and hope for the best. Without knowing where Waldo went, the videographer tracks away at break-off and nearly collides in mid-air with Waldo.

Friday Freakout: Zoo Dive, Close Call Openings

Talk about a zoo dive. Here’s a dozen skydivers on a tracking jump at the Invasion 2012 and a few of the people that fell behind get a little too close for comfort, tracking over each other — and towards each other — at break-off. The 180 opening didn’t help either. Compared to this other parachute collision in freefall, this close opening doesn’t look so bad.

There’s so much OMGWTF in this video, I don’t even know where to start, so let’s take it from the top. Stable exit and flying? Nope. Tracking at break-off? Nope. Canopy collision? Of course. Cutaway? Definitely (at least he threw both handles away ;-). Wearing cameras? Fuck yeah! Mario Galvan and Jose de Ines are two very lucky skydivers, and hopefully we can all learn from their mistakes. Videos like this don’t usually exist. The reason? Most people would be dead after hitting a canopy in freefall. The upper guy struck the lower guy with both hands on his way by in freefall. Wingsuit fly-bys can be fun. Unintentional, unplanned fly-bys can be scary as hell. This was a close call and could’ve been avoided had he paid less attention to shooting video and more attention to his surrounding environment. Videos are cool; staying alive is even cooler. I can see it now… “Mommy, mommy, a man just flew past the window.” And the response, “How many times have I told you not to lie to mommy (slap)!?” Lol. But this skydiver was almost close enough for passengers to spot from the aircraft that flew right by him. Luckily he didn’t end up like a bug on a windshield.

So my idea of a shitty situation goes something like this: plane stalls on jump run. Skydivers get ejected. Plane’s tail narrowly misses skydivers by inches (or less). WOW, these guys are lucky. At least it didn’t end like this terrifying plane stall, or their parachutes didn’t catch on the tail like this guy.

Having a collision in freefall after a cutaway is a really bad problem to have. Luckily for Brett Newman his Skyhook worked as advertised and saved his ass from a nasty collision after a cutaway… by only a few feet. Timing is everything, and the Skyhook delivered as promised.
