Freefly transition + premature deployment = shredded main canopy. Now he has two parachutes for the price of one. Even I’m still seeing stars from the opening, and I only watched the video ;) All is well that ends well. Thanks to Joe Ridler for sharing his footage.

Talk about GROUND RUSH! I can’t believe someone can hit the ground this hard and survive. My friend Liam Dunne of Deepseed is one lucky man. There are several factors that lead to this outcome, but the end result was a CYPRES save, intense ground rush, an 8 inch footprint in the ground, and surgery with 2 titanium rods and 4 screws holding his spine together. In Soviet Russia, underwear soils you! From what I understand from this incident, her cutaway handle wouldn’t chop so she had to run her fingers up the cable housing to manually pull the cutaway cables. Without an AAD, she manages to deploy the reserve only a few seconds before impacting terra firma, and then lands in trees in a snowy forest. WOW! Moral of the story… DON’T DO THIS!

Seems like Johnny Strange was a bit quick on his emergency procedures (wink, wink). What was he waiting for… the ground??! Check out his epic fight against some pretty daunting line twists — although this still doesn’t beat Brian Germain’s 80 seconds of line twists. Nice work on a valiant effort and a safe chop! Did anyone else find themselves trying to kick out of it or reach for their handles while watching this?

While wingsuits are all the rage these days, it’s often overlooked that — should a series of events go wrong — you’re now falling toward the earth in a straitjacket. No matter how you slice it, a low deployment followed by a malfunction (without an RSL or AAD), several revolutions on your back, a head-down reserve deployment, and a popped toggle once your reserve is open by 500 feet is, well, exciting to say the least. Be easy on this guy, he was kind enough to let us use this video to educate the masses.

It’s not too often you get a 3-in-1 parachute malfunction. It starts off with two guys entangled in lines. Then one of them puts their canopy on spin cycle. And just as they untangle from the mess, he cuts away, ejecting himself back into freefall — which, I must admit, kinda looks like fun considering the situation they were just in. But not to worry, he packed an extra large pink clamshell instead of a reserve and lands safely.

Here’s a parachute malfunction without the “freakout.” A line over can really mess up your day (or was that a tension knot?), but Johnny Nashville Havron seems pretty cool about the situation — especially considering this might be his first cutaway. He fights it. He gives it the one-finger salute. He fights it some more. But sometimes you’ve just got to accept defeat. Pull right, pull left and hello reserve. Beer!

There’s so much OMGWTF in this video, I don’t even know where to start, so let’s take it from the top. Stable exit and flying? Nope. Tracking at break-off? Nope. Canopy collision? Of course. Cutaway? Definitely (at least he threw both handles away ;-). Wearing cameras? Fuck yeah! Mario Galvan and Jose de Ines are two very lucky skydivers, and hopefully we can all learn from their mistakes. Cutaways are a strange thing… we don’t want to have them, but we also want to know all about them so we feel prepared if and when we ever have one. One way to prepare is to do an intentional cutaway on a system with a tertiary reserve like the one in this video, which shows all sorts of different malfunctions. Hey, I figure if we can’t actually have all these mals to prepare for, at least we can watch them on video and see them handled well. Good stuff. We got this.

Friday Freakout: Paratrooper Survives 50-Foot Cutaway!!!

Talk about a close call. This has to be one of the LOWEST cutaways I’ve ever seen. Two paratroopers get wrapped up and one of them chops his main less than 50 feet (give or take) above the ground, and luckily his reserve opens 15 feet before impact. Pardon me while I change my underwear!

Friday Freakout: The Longest Malfunction In Skydiving History

This has to be one of the longest parachute malfunctions I’ve ever seen. In fact, I made a sandwich halfway through it. Long story short, Niklas Daniel of AXIS Flight School intended to do a high altitude hop and pop to work on some canopy flocking, but got an interesting malfunction instead. Sure, a hook knife might have done the trick, but Nick opted to ride it out until 4,000 feet before chopping so that his canopy wouldn’t drift too far away from the DZ. And of all the days for this to happen… it was April Fool’s Day.
