While wingsuits are all the rage these days, it’s often overlooked that — should a series of events go wrong — you’re now falling toward the earth in a straitjacket. No matter how you slice it, a low deployment followed by a malfunction (without an RSL or AAD), several revolutions on your back, a head-down reserve deployment, and a popped toggle once your reserve is open by 500 feet is, well, exciting to say the least. Be easy on this guy, he was kind enough to let us use this video to educate the masses.

It’s hard to tell from this angle just how close this BASE jumper was from pounding in, but it looks like he was seconds away from impact. He’s lucky he didn’t fumble his PC, like this guy.

Maintaining altitude awareness is a good thing. Having an instructor that saves your ass is even better, especially when you’re flopping around on your back and then you freeze at pull time, like deer in the headlights. Before watching the very last second of this video, take a guess at his deployment altitude.

Who needs a parachute when you can land in trees?! After all, Gary Connery landed his wingsuit without a parachute into cardboard boxes, so what’s the big deal? But seriously, this BASE jumper was lucky to end up where he did — stuck between a rock, a tree and and a hard place. Fumbling your PC on a low pull ain’t cool. Whew. *wipes sweat off brow*

Friday Freakout: Altitude Awareness Fail. Double Fail!

What NOT to do while skydiving: Jump with a tandem as a new jumper. Start backflying after the tandem has deployed at 5,000ft. Go for the dock no matter what the altitude. Fly over the top of your mate at 2,000ft. Ignore your altimeter at 1,800ft. Take the time to wave off (to who!?) at 800ft. Shudder. My eyes were closed by the time it came to the downplane at 500ft. NEVER try this shit at home. Like, ever.
