With more than 7,000 jumps under his belt, Craig Stapleton’s nightmare came true after dumping his reserve into the mess above his head. But he miraculously lives to tell the tale after hitting the ground at 30 MPH. When everything goes wrong and your life flashes before you eyes… just pray to the Grape Gods.

At a dropzone somewhere in Middle Earth, one skydiver did pitch his pilot chute through a loop of shock cord on his jacket. Holy horsehoe, Batman! With his reserve pilot chute entangled in the risers and the canopy turning, he makes a heroic effort to straighten it out before landing. We love happy endings to malfunctions… good work!

Friday Freakout: Scary Double Malfunction. Make It Stop!

Ground rush can be fun occasionally – except when it doesn’t actually stop. This German skydiver narrowly misses an early appointment with death when his lines snag on his container and the freebag gets entangled with the main. With a heroic effort to climb the lines, he manages to get the reserve out, lands hard, and survives with minor injuries. Someone buy the man a beer!

A little ground rush is fun from time to time, unless you just had a flat spin in your wingsuit followed by a cutaway and reserve pilot chute in tow. A double malfunction can really mess up your day. Mike Holmes survived a nasty double malfunction at Taupo Tandem Skydiving in New Zealand, making a nauseating thud as he hit the ground at 70+ MPH. His intense footage aired on the Today Show shortly after his accident in December 2006. I’m not sure that luckily landing in a plump patch of blackberry bushes helped Mike survive this high speed crash (maybe it did?), but I bet he eats blackberries every day for breakfast; wouldn’t you?

Friday Freakout: Nasty Double Parachute Malfunction

Note to self: Don’t roll backwards through risers to celebrate a good jump! Chris Grissom was lucky enough to fight his way through this nasty double malfunction and walk away unharmed. I’ll bet $20 he doesn’t know how to speak Spanish… this mal just scared the English right out of him. Blue skies and soft(er) landings, Chris.
