Friday Freakout: Epic Tree Crash-Landing. Fail!

This just might be the dumbest thing Solomon Ould has ever done. He wanted to ground launch off the other side of the mountain and land on the beach. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but without much wind and no (good) landing area in sight, his unplanned journey leads to an epic crash-landing in a forest of tall trees — almost getting impaled by a broken tree stump in the process.

Say it ain’t so: Peter Griffin is the newest addition to our dysfunctional skyfamily (giggity!!). I can’t decide what’s better: his “know it all guy” ‘tude on the plane, his sweet freestyle moves, or the fact that his demo jump onto the Vegas strip went horribly wrong. One thing is for sure, this episode was awesome for the first half.

Friday Freakout: Sled BASE Jump Almost Ends In Disaster

Instead of a tried and true ski-BASE exit, Dennis Ohlsen opted to ride a sled off the edge of a snowy cliff. Sure, a fun idea in theory… until your sled gets stuck on the edge, sending you off said cliff with almost no forward speed. Dennis comes incredibly close to the cliff in his first few seconds of freefall, but luckily he escapes without a scratch.

When you’re trying to get separation before you pull, don’t do this! Short of hitting the other parachute in freefall (like this guy), it doesn’t get much closer than this. Thanks to Morgan Mackay at Vertical Films for sending us the video of his crazy close call — I’m glad this ended well for you mate. It can never hurt to get plenty of separation and keep an eye out for other jumpers :)

After watching this, I’m having second thoughts about trying speedflying, or flying a pink parachute. OUCH! Triple ouch. First he crashes into a tree, followed by a failed barrel roll, and then he comes up short while trying to clear a gap and crashes into a cliff. Pretty scenery, not so pretty landings… even with snow and skis to soften the hits. Ça va?!

Soooo, a skydiver in this group fell below the formation and instead of getting back up to the formation or watching them until break-off, he just decided to track off in a random direction and hope for the best. Without knowing where Waldo went, the videographer tracks away at break-off and nearly collides in mid-air with Waldo.

Then that wet dream turns into wet underwear faster than you can say “oh shiiiii…” As the ground rush intensifies, the video cuts out — he didn’t think his GoPro was on, so he thought he was turning it on to film the impact but ended up turning it off instead. Double fail.

When you see 15 other parachutes opening, maybe it’s time to pull. Just a suggestion. Back tracking for 25 seconds and no alti check?? I call brain malfunction on this one, or maybe he just fell asleep, but he just keeps tracking on. And on. And on. All the way down to nearly 750ft, resulting in a two-out and crash landing. P.S. Darwin says “Hi.”

Friday Freakout: High Bar BASE Jump Goes Horribly Wrong

Every time I see a BASE jump, I’m always thinking, “You know what this needs… more gymnastics. Particularly, the high bar!” It turns out Norwegian BASE jumper Richard Henriksen had the same thought and did just that. Unfortunately for him, the stunt goes horribly wrong and the high bar structure collapses at the edge of the cliff. Not only does Richard survive, but luckily he avoids being struck by the rod and chains that fall along with him. What do you think: cool concept or bad idea to begin with?

OMG! This has to be one of the craziest/scariest tandem videos I’ve ever seen. Kinda makes me feel sick just watching it, but luckily this tandem instructor’s negligence ends without casualty. Long story short, this 80 year-old grandma does a tandem skydive for her birthday and nearly falls out of the harness because it’s not properly adjusted prior to exit. Certainly not your typical tandem jump, but WOW is this scary. Barf.
