Seems like Johnny Strange was a bit quick on his emergency procedures (wink, wink). What was he waiting for… the ground??! Check out his epic fight against some pretty daunting line twists — although this still doesn’t beat Brian Germain’s 80 seconds of line twists. Nice work on a valiant effort and a safe chop! Did anyone else find themselves trying to kick out of it or reach for their handles while watching this?

Friday Freakout: Triple Fail Trifecta – 3 Speedflying Crashes

After watching this, I’m having second thoughts about trying speedflying, or flying a pink parachute. OUCH! Triple ouch. First he crashes into a tree, followed by a failed barrel roll, and then he comes up short while trying to clear a gap and crashes into a cliff. Pretty scenery, not so pretty landings… even with snow and skis to soften the hits. Ça va?!

Friday Freakout: “The Screamer” Tandem

Friday Freakout: Parachute Opens, Catches On Plane Tail

As the saying goes, “Plan the jump and jump the plan.” But sometimes a jump just doesn’t go according to plan. Like when your parachute deploys in the door and wraps around the tail of the plane, tossing you around like a puppet on strings. This video, as well as the premature parachute opening on exit and the GoPro snagging a reserve handle, should serve as constant reminder to always check your gear and protect your handles.

In other news, I’ve heard AADs save lives, and rumor has it that flaring helps for soft landings. I still think this insane dirty low pull is the lowest I’ve ever seen — it’s just 8 seconds of pure crazy!

Friday Freakout: Skydiver Survives Double Malfunction Crash

Mike Holmes survived a nasty double malfunction at Taupo Tandem Skydiving in New Zealand, making a nauseating thud as he hit the ground at 70+ MPH. His intense footage aired on the Today Show shortly after his accident in December 2006. I’m not sure that luckily landing in a plump patch of blackberry bushes helped Mike survive this high speed crash (maybe it did?), but I bet he eats blackberries every day for breakfast; wouldn’t you?

This is the ultimate Friday Freakout. A paraplegic tandem skydive. A stalled plane in a corkscrew. A loose reserve handle. And scared skydivers. Friday Freakout: Paraglider Cheats Death in Moab

The last thing a paraglider wants to see flash before their eyes as they ground launch off a cliff in Moab is their glider. I think the only thing that re-inflated his glider was the warm, moist air that came out of his pants. “Oh f**k. Ohhh, shit. Holy shit” sounds about right. This could’ve been really messy. Blue skies… and soft(er) launches!

Friday Freakout: Low Hook Turn. Bad Idea.

Don’t try this at home. Initiating a hook turn 100 feet lower than normal will get you a broken femur, a nice piece of titanium and a few screws in your leg. And if you do attempt to pull off a stunt like this, you may consider trying it at the end of the summer… not the beginning. For those of you looking for some swooping advice, Hitler had mad swooping skillz. Who knew?

Friday Freakout: We’ve Got A Screamer

This girl is still game for her tandem jump, but she screams her ass off on the way to the door. This is a pretty tame “screamer” compared to the grown man crying before his tandem or the woman freaking out on her tandem exit. Holy &$@%, this is scary! This video should emphasize the importance of a proper spot, even if you’re not the first group exiting… especially over mountains. Audidbles and AADs didn’t help in this situation because they were set for a landing area at a much lower altitude, and drifting in freefall may have also been a contributing factor. If anything, learn from this video to avoid the same mistakes; it could’ve ended much worse. There has been some debate over whether he should’ve used his reserve (textbook emergency procedure) instead of his main (instinct). Thoughts?
