Talk about GROUND RUSH! I can’t believe someone can hit the ground this hard and survive. My friend Liam Dunne of Deepseed is one lucky man. There are several factors that lead to this outcome, but the end result was a CYPRES save, intense ground rush, an 8 inch footprint in the ground, and surgery with 2 titanium rods and 4 screws holding his spine together. Friday Freakout: Wingsuit Malfunction, Can’t Cutaway

If there’s anything worse than trying to kick out of spinning line twists while in the confines of a wingsuit, it’s not being able to cutaway when you need to. At all. Not quite sure exactly what happened here, but the end result is a two-out and a happy landing.

While wingsuits are all the rage these days, it’s often overlooked that — should a series of events go wrong — you’re now falling toward the earth in a straitjacket. No matter how you slice it, a low deployment followed by a malfunction (without an RSL or AAD), several revolutions on your back, a head-down reserve deployment, and a popped toggle once your reserve is open by 500 feet is, well, exciting to say the least. Be easy on this guy, he was kind enough to let us use this video to educate the masses.

At a dropzone somewhere in Middle Earth, one skydiver did pitch his pilot chute through a loop of shock cord on his jacket. Holy horsehoe, Batman! With his reserve pilot chute entangled in the risers and the canopy turning, he makes a heroic effort to straighten it out before landing. We love happy endings to malfunctions… good work!

Friday Freakout: THE DUMBEST “MALFUNCTION”. EVER. PERIOD.

This is by far the DUMBEST “malfunction” in skydiving history! Period. We all know how much damage a Category 5 hurricane can cause. Well Gerardo Flores is a Category 5 idiot! Watching this video actually makes me quite angry, but here’s the breakdown: 30 jumps (in 2 years??!!), wearing a GoPro with only 30 jumps (WTF??!!), then “ee jus ‘sploded” at 13,000 feet. The problem here is “you never pull above 6,000 feet” (right??!!) because “ees super high”, then he considered chopping a perfectly good canopy (WTF??!!) and then randomly passes out even though he looked pretty awake and alert to me (yet he remained unconscious for 2 weeks afterwards??!!). And then, finally, and magically, he managed to land on the dropzone… unconscious??!! Unless I’m missing something, this story makes NO sense. Well done Gerardo, looks like you got your 15 minutes of fame. And now, let’s hear your thoughts in the comments… let the feeding frenzy begin…

Friday Freakout: Parachute Sucked Into Wingsuit Burble

A wingsuit, a burble and a slider-down opening with line dump at full speed. All rolled into one. That is all. No cutaway, but it sure looks like one helluva ride! For anyone interested in the details: he was flying a Tony Suit X-Bird, PD Spectre 97, 11.5 foot bridle, and a 30 inch PC. Any advice on how to avoid this next time?

Friday Freakout: 3-In-1 Parachute Wrap, Spin And Ejection

It’s not too often you get a 3-in-1 parachute malfunction. It starts off with two guys entangled in lines. Then one of them puts their canopy on spin cycle. And just as they untangle from the mess, he cuts away, ejecting himself back into freefall — which, I must admit, kinda looks like fun considering the situation they were just in. But not to worry, he packed an extra large pink clamshell instead of a reserve and lands safely.

I’m not exactly sure how many jumps this AFF student had prior to this one, but it doesn’t matter, a pilot chute in tow is a scary malfunction for any skydiver. You know it’s a bad situation when you’re instructor screams “oh fuck!” The unstable deployment surely didn’t help, but it seems the bridle got caught on his rig somewhere. Luckily he manages to clear the mal and deploys his main. Phew.

Thermals are a paraglider’s wet dream. That is until your paraglider goes boom! Then that wet dream turns into wet underwear faster than you can say “oh shiiiii…” As the ground rush intensifies, the video cuts out — he didn’t think his GoPro was on, so he thought he was turning it on to film the impact but ended up turning it off instead. Double fail.

He fights it. He gives it the one-finger salute. He fights it some more. But sometimes you’ve just got to accept defeat. Pull right, pull left and hello reserve. Beer!

When you see 15 other parachutes opening, maybe it’s time to pull. Just a suggestion. Back tracking for 25 seconds and no alti check?? I call brain malfunction on this one, or maybe he just fell asleep, but he just keeps tracking on. And on. And on. All the way down to nearly 750ft, resulting in a two-out and crash landing. P.S. Darwin says “Hi.”

Umm, that’s called a horseshoe and, contrary to Irish folklore, a horseshoe while skydiving is NOT lucky — it’s a malfunction! The key is to ignore the malfunction and arch harder. Oh, and dodge your friend who’s trying to dump you out. Or maybe he was trying to dock — it’s somewhat unclear. Lol. But at least they got a nice 4-way after he deployed, and everyone reached the ground safely.

Imagine jumping out of a pickup truck on the freeway, skidding to a slow grind, just before the rope tethering you to it snaps tight and jolts you to a halt. That’s pretty much what this trooper was feeling as he got hung up on his static line. With lines wrapped around his gear and reserve, there’s no quick fix. The solution? Clipping on another parachute… and that gets a thumbs up. Well done sir, well done.

There’s so much OMGWTF in this video, I don’t even know where to start, so let’s take it from the top. Stable exit and flying? Nope. Tracking at break-off? Nope. Canopy collision? Of course. Cutaway? Definitely (at least he threw both handles away ;-). Wearing cameras? Fuck yeah! Mario Galvan and Jose de Ines are two very lucky skydivers, and hopefully we can all learn from their mistakes.
