In his own words, “From the moment you jump, it’s just this out of body experience, which is what life is all about. Without intensity or challenge in life, nobody reaches happiness. You reach content and it’s dangerous for your soul. Honestly.” Needless to say, Super Frenchie is pretty intense. After all, he is famous for escaping an avalanche by ski-BASE jumping off a cliff.

If there’s anyone who knows how to go balls out, it’s Matthias Giraud — Super Frenchie extraordinaire. As a throwback to the early days of his career, here’s some archive footage of the first cliff he ever ski-BASE jumped off: Mississippi Head, a 250-foot cliff on Mount Hood. Fast forward to 2012, Matthias has done the world’s first ski-BASE jump off the Matterhorn, as well as an insane avalanche ski-BASE jump.

He was lucky enough to avoid the same disaster that cost the late Shane McConkey his life — losing a ski on exit. But Matthias likes a little excitement. After all, he has outrun an avalanche by ski-BASE jumping off a cliff to escape it’s deadly path.
