Incredible Inspiration: Corp. Todd Love Finds His Wings

Skydiving and the wind tunnel seem easily accessible for most of us… who have both arms and legs. Corporal Todd Love returned from the war in Afghanistan with only one arm — he has no legs and his left arm was amputated below the elbow. BUT, incredibly, Todd has found his wings and can enjoy the freedom of flying just like the rest of us thanks to his coaches Niklas Daniel and Brianne Thompson of Axis Flight School. I’ve never seen CYPRES tubes and the Skydive Expo look this beautiful. And the music makes me think of Zihuatanejo, like in Shawshank Redemption. The truth is, this is a stunning tribute to a company that literally saves skydivers’ lives, and helps us feel even more peace when we fly in skies like these. Beautiful. Thank you, Airtech/CYPRES.

Friday Freakout: The Longest Malfunction In Skydiving History

This has to be one of the longest parachute malfunctions I’ve ever seen. In fact, I made a sandwich halfway through it. Long story short, Niklas Daniel of AXIS Flight School intended to do a high altitude hop and pop to work on some canopy flocking, but got an interesting malfunction instead. Sure, a hook knife might have done the trick, but Nick opted to ride it out until 4,000 feet before chopping so that his canopy wouldn’t drift too far away from the DZ. And of all the days for this to happen… it was April Fool’s Day.

Formation Skydiving: Powerful Women Breaking Records

On this same day last year, the Arizona women’s 27-way formation skydiving state record was set during the Holidays Boogie at Skydive Arizona — 32 years after the 20-way formation skydiving record was set back in 1978. Well, it’s that record-breaking time of year again. They’re having another go at it today to beat last year’s 27-way record. Good luck to all of the women involved in today’s record attempts at Skydive Arizona!

Niklas got great footage of this off-site jump with a bowling ball at the 8th annual Mother Of All Boogies at Skydive Moab. Do you think it was a strike or a gutter ball when it hit the ground?

Friday Freakout: Parachute Catches Fire, Goes BOOM!

Legendary skydive cinematographer Joe Jennings was asked to coordinate a burning parachute stunt for a music video. Normally they soak the parachute in gasoline and build an ignition switch. But the first attempt didn’t work, so they added gun powder and closed off the front cells to prevent the fuel from drying out too quickly. When the stunt skydiver, Niklas Daniel, hits the switch… BOOM goes the dynamite!
