Thursday Throwback: Yosemite BASE Jumping In 1980

Probably not the best exits I’ve ever seen, but what can you expect from a bunch of skydivers trying to BASE jump off El Capitan in Yosemite back in 1980. I still don’t think anything beats this other BASE jumping footage with round parachutes back in the day. That’s just bat-shit crazy!!

Wow. Just, wow. Pink spandex, frap hats and plastic food items. Flying microphones, guitars, and “baker man baking bread” in freefall. I feel like I’m having some kind of weird trippy retro skydiving dream! But I have to admit I enjoyed the tune, including the Mary Poppins cameo and a mid-flight trumpet. Definitely made me giggle!

Skydiving history, right here! The X-Games coverage of the freefly competition in 1997 between Z Airtime, the Fly Boyz, and the Freefly Clowns. Not the time of belly-mounted reserves or anything, but the time of loud jumpsuits and antics on the podium. Ok, so the antics haven’t changed a whole lot. Super cool snapshot into some of the flyers who brought freeflying to our sport. Respect.

Hilarious 1984 Skydiving Remake of Van Halen’s “Jump”

OMG! THIS is hilarious skydiving history right here, my friends. In 1984, a group of jumpers re-made the skydiving version of Van Halen’s song “Jump.” Sure, it’s pretty easy to edit videos nowadays, but these guys did it when it wasn’t. And it’s awesome! Nobody’s wearing a helmet, and everyone has a dirty stache and a massive jumpsuit. But I’ll be damned if these guys didn’t help pave the way to where our sport is now. Totally hilarious, totally historic, totally watch it.

Friday Freakout: 1930s Parachute “Test” Off Cliff

Apparently the role of a parachute test pilot in the 1930s was a lot more hardcore/crazy than it is today. It looks like cliff strikes and near certain death was part of the job description back then. “If it lets you down, it’ll be a great success. If not, you get a new parachute absolutely free!” That’s a good deal, right? There’s also some bonus footage of the “air taxi” invention, which didn’t really take off (no pun intended). Wouldn’t you rather skydive into the office instead of driving or taking the bus?

First World Champion Skysurfing Demo (1993)

Old school footage of Russell Calkins, one of first world champion skysurfers, on ESPN’s show Skyblazin’. It aired in 1993 and was hosted by Don Swayze, who assures the audience that “skysurfing is still on the edge.”
