Freefly transition + premature deployment = shredded main canopy. Now he has two parachutes for the price of one. Even I’m still seeing stars from the opening, and I only watched the video ;) All is well that ends well. Thanks to Joe Ridler for sharing his footage.

Talk about GROUND RUSH! I can’t believe someone can hit the ground this hard and survive. My friend Liam Dunne of Deepseed is one lucky man. There are several factors that lead to this outcome, but the end result was a CYPRES save, intense ground rush, an 8 inch footprint in the ground, and surgery with 2 titanium rods and 4 screws holding his spine together. Friday Freakout: Epic Tree Crash-Landing. Fail!

This just might be the dumbest thing Solomon Ould has ever done. He wanted to ground launch off the other side of the mountain and land on the beach. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but without much wind and no (good) landing area in sight, his unplanned journey leads to an epic crash-landing in a forest of tall trees — almost getting impaled by a broken tree stump in the process.

At a dropzone somewhere in Middle Earth, one skydiver did pitch his pilot chute through a loop of shock cord on his jacket. Holy horsehoe, Batman! With his reserve pilot chute entangled in the risers and the canopy turning, he makes a heroic effort to straighten it out before landing. We love happy endings to malfunctions… good work!

I’m not exactly sure how many jumps this AFF student had prior to this one, but it doesn’t matter, a pilot chute in tow is a scary malfunction for any skydiver. You know it’s a bad situation when you’re instructor screams “oh fuck!” The unstable deployment surely didn’t help, but it seems the bridle got caught on his rig somewhere. Luckily he manages to clear the mal and deploys his main. Phew.

This 30-way formation skydive became a 29-way after a premature deployment right after exiting the lead plane. He didn’t have a chance to wave off, so his friend waved off for him. Well, it was more like a wave goodbye, but it’s the thought that counts.

Imagine jumping out of a pickup truck on the freeway, skidding to a slow grind, just before the rope tethering you to it snaps tight and jolts you to a halt. That’s pretty much what this trooper was feeling as he got hung up on his static line. With lines wrapped around his gear and reserve, there’s no quick fix. The solution? Clipping on another parachute… and that gets a thumbs up. Well done sir, well done.

There’s so much OMGWTF in this video, I don’t even know where to start, so let’s take it from the top. Stable exit and flying? Nope. Tracking at break-off? Nope. Canopy collision? Of course. Cutaway? Definitely (at least he threw both handles away ;-). Wearing cameras? Fuck yeah! Mario Galvan and Jose de Ines are two very lucky skydivers, and hopefully we can all learn from their mistakes. Some days things just don’t go your way. This poor skydiver was having one of those bad days. First, the freefly tube was spinning him around like a top. Then, his altimeter gets trapped in his risers on deployment. And finally, he steers one-handed and lands super hard in a ditch. In a situation like this, let go of the damn tube — it’s not worth your life! Live and learn people, live and learn.

Videos like this don’t usually exist. The reason? Most people would be dead after hitting a canopy in freefall. The upper guy struck the lower guy with both hands on his way by in freefall.
