Friday Freakout: Crazy Close Call, Misses Parachute By Inches

When you’re trying to get separation before you pull, don’t do this! Short of hitting the other parachute in freefall (like this guy), it doesn’t get much closer than this. Thanks to Morgan Mackay at Vertical Films for sending us the video of his crazy close call — I’m glad this ended well for you mate. It can never hurt to get plenty of separation and keep an eye out for other jumpers :)

Friday Freakout: Where’s Waldo? Near Mid-Air Collision

Soooo, a skydiver in this group fell below the formation and instead of getting back up to the formation or watching them until break-off, he just decided to track off in a random direction and hope for the best. Without knowing where Waldo went, the videographer tracks away at break-off and nearly collides in mid-air with Waldo.

Friday Freakout: Zoo Dive, Close Call Openings

Talk about a zoo dive. Here’s a dozen skydivers on a tracking jump at the Invasion 2012 and a few of the people that fell behind get a little too close for comfort, tracking over each other — and towards each other — at break-off. The 180 opening didn’t help either. Compared to this other parachute collision in freefall, this close opening doesn’t look so bad.

Friday Freakout: Double Trouble Canopy Collision — MUST SEE

There’s so much OMGWTF in this video, I don’t even know where to start, so let’s take it from the top. Stable exit and flying? Nope. Tracking at break-off? Nope. Canopy collision? Of course. Cutaway? Definitely (at least he threw both handles away ;-). Wearing cameras? Fuck yeah! Mario Galvan and Jose de Ines are two very lucky skydivers, and hopefully we can all learn from their mistakes. Videos like this don’t usually exist. The reason? Most people would be dead after hitting a canopy in freefall. The upper guy struck the lower guy with both hands on his way by in freefall. I’ve posted some collision close calls in the past, but this is as close as it gets and still living to talk about it. Be safe out there everyone.

So this video is basically some badass XRW proximity flying. Um, minus the wingsuit. And, er, take away any notion of planning. In fact, its nothing like that at all. Doing CRW (canopy relative work) in clouds probably wasn’t the wisest decision these two skydivers ever made. It’s a bit like doing a low hook turn blindfolded. In fact, thinking about it, that may even be safer.

Having a collision in freefall after a cutaway is a really bad problem to have. Luckily for Brett Newman his Skyhook worked as advertised and saved his ass from a nasty collision after a cutaway… by only a few feet. Timing is everything, and the Skyhook delivered as promised. In case you didn’t realize just how close this really was, watch it again… and maybe once more for good measure.

The tie-dye shirt, vintage canopy colors and grainy video quality is a dead giveaway this is old footage of a BASE jumping accident at Bridge Day. What an intense accident to walk away from unharmed! Friday Freakout: Crunch! 60 MPH Parachute Collision

At 60 MPH (about 100 km/h), the crunching sound of this gnarly parachute collision is like watching a car crash… minus the airbags and bumpers. I’m sure both of these skydivers wish they’d tracked just a little bit further apart for more separation. Remember to keep your head up, eyes open, and cover yourself with bubble wrap whenever possible.

Friday Freakout: Surprise!… Canopy Collision

Losing your helmet in freefall is never fun (watch closely at the 0:03 mark). Neither is a canopy collision/wrap immediately after dumping your main. This video is from the good ‘ol days — 1989 — back when, apparently, tracking away at break-off was only a suggestion. Oh well, nice video.
