Friday Freakout: Insanely Low Cutaway, 3 Seconds From Impact!!!

In Soviet Russia, underwear soils you! From what I understand from this incident, her cutaway handle wouldn’t chop so she had to run her fingers up the cable housing to manually pull the cutaway cables. Without an AAD, she manages to deploy the reserve only a few seconds before impacting terra firma, and then lands in trees in a snowy forest. WOW! Moral of the story… DON’T DO THIS!

Friday Freakout: Wingsuit Malfunction, Can’t Cutaway

If there’s anything worse than trying to kick out of spinning line twists while in the confines of a wingsuit, it’s not being able to cutaway when you need to. At all. Not quite sure exactly what happened here, but the end result is a two-out and a happy landing.

Friday Freakout: Line Twists, With A Pinch Of Ground Rush

Thermals are a paraglider’s wet dream. That is until your paraglider goes boom! Then that wet dream turns into wet underwear faster than you can say “oh shiiiii…” As the ground rush intensifies, the video cuts out — he didn’t think his GoPro was on, so he thought he was turning it on to film the impact but ended up turning it off instead. Double fail.

Friday Freakout: Premature AAD, Two-Out, Water Landing.

Having your Vigil fire prematurely, then getting your head stuck between a twist in your reserve risers and not being able to see what’s happening behind you, followed by a water landing kinda sucks. Definitely not the best way to start off your weekend. My advice: buy a case of beer, get a re-pack, and better luck next weekend.

Getting a leg wrapped up in your riser during deployment is definitely up there on the “ooooohhh fuuuucckk” list. Lets just say that the six-hundred-and-something square feet of trailing fabric probably wasn’t making this guy feel all warm and fuzzy inside — but a clean pair of underwear sure would.

Here’s a parachute malfunction without the “freakout.” A line over can really mess up your day (or was that a tension knot?), but Johnny Nashville Havron seems pretty cool about the situation — especially considering this might be his first cutaway. He fights it. He gives it the one-finger salute. He fights it some more. But sometimes you’ve just got to accept defeat. Pull right, pull left and hello reserve. Beer!

When you see 15 other parachutes opening, maybe it’s time to pull. Just a suggestion. Back tracking for 25 seconds and no alti check?? I call brain malfunction on this one, or maybe he just fell asleep, but he just keeps tracking on. And on. And on. All the way down to nearly 750ft, resulting in a two-out and crash landing. P.S. Darwin says “Hi.”

Reaching around in a wingsuit to pull your pin when your bridle is wrapped around your hackey is a bit of a joy-killer. As is the resulting bag lock. Luckily for Walker Mackey his reserve plays nice and comes out clean. Bet that brought a smile to his face!

Whether you’re a skydiver or BASE jumper, PCA (Pilot Chute Assist) deployments can be fun. But it kinda sucks when you have to manually extract your reserve because it’s stuck in the container. I think the silver lining is that he was already on his back, which made it easier to spot the malfunction and pull it out quickly. Any ideas as to why his reserve was stuck in the container?

What NOT to do while skydiving: Jump with a tandem as a new jumper. Start backflying after the tandem has deployed at 5,000ft. Go for the dock no matter what the altitude. Fly over the top of your mate at 2,000ft. Ignore your altimeter at 1,800ft. Take the time to wave off (to who!?) at 800ft. Shudder. My eyes were closed by the time it came to the downplane at 500ft. NEVER try this shit at home. Like, ever.

Ground rush can be fun occasionally – except when it doesn’t actually stop. This German skydiver narrowly misses an early appointment with death when his lines snag on his container and the freebag gets entangled with the main. With a heroic effort to climb the lines, he manages to get the reserve out, lands hard, and survives with minor injuries. Someone buy the man a beer!

Although this AFF instructor-in-training seems a little nervous, there’s no reason he should’ve dumped this low. Line twists below 2,000 feet are a pain in the ass, but then chopping that low and having to deal with more line twists on your reserve really sucks! Friday Freakout: Crunch! 60 MPH Parachute Collision

At 60 MPH (about 100 km/h), the crunching sound of this gnarly parachute collision is like watching a car crash… minus the airbags and bumpers. I’m sure both of these skydivers wish they’d tracked just a little bit further apart for more separation. Remember to keep your head up, eyes open, and cover yourself with bubble wrap whenever possible.

What do you get when a skydiver with only 115 jumps decides to use a camera and impress a girl? A video with too many mistakes to mention. After everything that goes wrong, at least he remembers to collapse his slider, right?! He’s lucky all this cost was a reserve pack job and a new pair of underwear. If he really wants to impress her, maybe he’ll buy her a second glove.
