Have you ever been in the plane on the way to altitude and people by the door only open it halfway? Let this video serve as a reminder as to why, if the door is open, we gotta push that bad boy all the way up. More air for everyone, and in the event that you find your reserve deploying in the plane, you won’t get stuck in the half-open door — or even worse, ripped through it. This one’s a doozy.

Friday Freakout: The Craziest Ground Rush You Will EVER See!!!

Talk about GROUND RUSH! I can’t believe someone can hit the ground this hard and survive. My friend Liam Dunne of Deepseed is one lucky man. There are several factors that lead to this outcome, but the end result was a CYPRES save, intense ground rush, an 8 inch footprint in the ground, and surgery with 2 titanium rods and 4 screws holding his spine together. This just might be the dumbest thing Solomon Ould has ever done. He wanted to ground launch off the other side of the mountain and land on the beach. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but without much wind and no (good) landing area in sight, his unplanned journey leads to an epic crash-landing in a forest of tall trees — almost getting impaled by a broken tree stump in the process.

Friday Freakout: Insanely Low Cutaway, 3 Seconds From Impact!!!

In Soviet Russia, underwear soils you! From what I understand from this incident, her cutaway handle wouldn’t chop so she had to run her fingers up the cable housing to manually pull the cutaway cables. Without an AAD, she manages to deploy the reserve only a few seconds before impacting terra firma, and then lands in trees in a snowy forest. WOW! Moral of the story… DON’T DO THIS!

Friday Freakout: Bridle Wrap, Wingsuit Rodeo Goes Wrong

What could possibly go wrong with a wingsuit rodeo — if it doesn’t work out, you just fall off the wingsuit and business as usual, right? Think again. Remember, wingsuits have large burbles. Here’s what can happen if you pitch while on the back of a wingsuit, not to mention the extra pucker factor of your bridle wrapping around your camera while the pilot chute bounces around in said burble. Sliding off the side of the wingsuit is safer for both parties. Thanks to Spot for the video and advice.

While wingsuits are all the rage these days, it’s often overlooked that — should a series of events go wrong — you’re now falling toward the earth in a straitjacket. No matter how you slice it, a low deployment followed by a malfunction (without an RSL or AAD), several revolutions on your back, a head-down reserve deployment, and a popped toggle once your reserve is open by 500 feet is, well, exciting to say the least. Be easy on this guy, he was kind enough to let us use this video to educate the masses.

When you’re trying to get separation before you pull, don’t do this! Short of hitting the other parachute in freefall (like this guy), it doesn’t get much closer than this. It can never hurt to get plenty of separation and keep an eye out for other jumpers :)

Sure, it’s funny to watch, but some of these closing speeds are scary, not to mention the grand finale at the 2:25 mark. If you find yourself flying like a dick instead using good skills like the Fly Like Brick boys, then maybe it’s time to get some coaching or jump in smaller groups. Fly safe out there everyone!

Friday Freakout: Parachute Sucked Into Wingsuit Burble

A wingsuit, a burble and a slider-down opening with line dump at full speed. All rolled into one. That is all. No cutaway, but it sure looks like one helluva ride! For anyone interested in the details: he was flying a Tony Suit X-Bird, PD Spectre 97, 11.5 foot bridle, and a 30 inch PC. Any advice on how to avoid this next time?

Backflying can be relaxing, but on Tim Gray’s 17th jump, his first attempt looks nothing short of terrifying! It’s like a mix between the coolest theme park ride of all time and being stuck on a merry-go-round feeling sick. Unfortunately for Tim, this flat spin resulted in broken blood vessels in his eyes, face, and brain, followed by 8 months of intense migraines. Not fun. WARNING: Watching this may cause you to feel dizzy or cause your brain to explode.

Soooo, a skydiver in this group fell below the formation and instead of getting back up to the formation or watching them until break-off, he just decided to track off in a random direction and hope for the best. Without knowing where Waldo went, the videographer tracks away at break-off and nearly collides in mid-air with Waldo.

Imagine jumping out of a pickup truck on the freeway, skidding to a slow grind, just before the rope tethering you to it snaps tight and jolts you to a halt. That’s pretty much what this trooper was feeling as he got hung up on his static line. With lines wrapped around his gear and reserve, there’s no quick fix. The solution? Clipping on another parachute… and that gets a thumbs up. Well done sir, well done.

There’s so much OMGWTF in this video, I don’t even know where to start, so let’s take it from the top. Stable exit and flying? Nope. Tracking at break-off? Nope. Canopy collision? Of course. Cutaway? Definitely (at least he threw both handles away ;-). Wearing cameras? Fuck yeah! Mario Galvan and Jose de Ines are two very lucky skydivers, and hopefully we can all learn from their mistakes.
