Friday Freakout: Sled BASE Jump Almost Ends In Disaster

Instead of a tried and true ski-BASE exit, Dennis Ohlsen opted to ride a sled off the edge of a snowy cliff. Sure, a fun idea in theory… until your sled gets stuck on the edge, sending you off said cliff with almost no forward speed. Dennis comes incredibly close to the cliff in his first few seconds of freefall, but luckily he escapes without a scratch.

Whoa snow. Whoa skis. Whoa parachutes. Whoa skis and parachutes flying down the crazy beautiful French/Swiss Alps. Whoa BASE flips and side-by-side and stacked deployments. For me, the non-BASE chick, this looks totally tight, not sure if too tight. Stars of the show are JT Holmes and Tim Dutton in honor of their friend, Benny Brackett. Bottom line: it’s badass footage, definitely worth a watch. ~Mel :)

It’s not every day you get to ski off a 260ft cliff, launch a double backflip, and fly away in a parachute. As Matthias “Super Frenchie” Giraud’s first ski-BASE with JT Holmes (of the Red Bull Air Force), and JT’s first ski-BASE jump since the legendary Shane McConkey‘s tragic accident in 2009, this was a very special “first” for both of them. If there’s anyone who knows how to go balls out, it’s Matthias Giraud — Super Frenchie extraordinaire. As a throwback to the early days of his career, here’s some archive footage of the first cliff he ever ski-BASE jumped off: Mississippi Head, a 250-foot cliff on Mount Hood. Fast forward to 2012, Matthias has done the world’s first ski-BASE jump off the Matterhorn, as well as an insane avalanche ski-BASE jump.

In episode 4 of the Super Frenchie Diaries, Matthias Giraud pulls off the world’s first ski-BASE jump on the Matterhorn in the Pennine Alps, Switzerland. He was lucky enough to avoid the same disaster that cost the late Shane McConkey his life — losing a ski on exit. But Matthias likes a little excitement. After all, he has outrun an avalanche by ski-BASE jumping off a cliff to escape it’s deadly path.

Ski-BASE opened up a whole new world of extreme skiing and BASE jumping for Shane. “There are a lot of lines that are really esthetic; really cool-looking lines that you can’t do, because it ends in a big giant cliff. But if you throw a parachute on your back and you have some BASE jumping skills, you can totally ski those lines.” – Shane McConkey. R.I.P. brother.
