Backflying can be relaxing, but on Tim Gray’s 17th jump, his first attempt looks nothing short of terrifying! It’s like a mix between the coolest theme park ride of all time and being stuck on a merry-go-round feeling sick. Unfortunately for Tim, this flat spin resulted in broken blood vessels in his eyes, face, and brain, followed by 8 months of intense migraines. Not fun. WARNING: Watching this may cause you to feel dizzy or cause your brain to explode.

Friday Freakout: AFF Student’s Pilot Chute In Tow

I’m not exactly sure how many jumps this AFF student had prior to this one, but it doesn’t matter, a pilot chute in tow is a scary malfunction for any skydiver. You know it’s a bad situation when you’re instructor screams “oh fuck!” The unstable deployment surely didn’t help, but it seems the bridle got caught on his rig somewhere. Luckily he manages to clear the mal and deploys his main. Phew.

Friday Freakout: Skydive Instructor Hangs From Plane By Seatbelt

Seatbelts are a great idea when you’re taking off in a plane. Not so much when you’re exiting a plane. This skydive instructor forgets to unbuckle his seatbelt before exit, and ends up hanging from the plane as his student exits alone on his first (unplanned) solo jump. We all make mistakes, and the key is to learn from them. I’m sure he’ll be dreaming about seatbelts for weeks to come and won’t forget to unbuckle anymore.

Friday Freakout: Oh-No Hop-n-Pop!

This is pretty much what you don’t want to do on a hop-n-pop. BUT, what she did do right is get a parachute out over her head and landed safely. Primo, numero uno, most important thing. Great. And here are some tips on how to improve: 1) get further forward in the door so you’re sure not to hit the back bulkhead, 2) know that the wind outside is strong so be strong yourself, and 3) present to the relative wind. No, this one happens in the door and is usually performed by a friend who sees your d-bag and lines trailing out of your container. What do you do when your AFF student’s toggle comes unstowed in freefall? Do nothing? Watch it flop around like spaghetti? The instructor in this video had a pretty sweet (slash scary, slash dangerous) save, and managed to unstow the other toggle on deployment. Luckily it worked; the student had a nice on-heading opening and the instructor landed with all 10 fingers. What a lucky grab.

Friday Freakout: Student’s Parachute Rips In Half!

Let me know if you think there’s anything wrong with the story behind this mess. Both of these skydivers were turned away at a DZ for wearing a camera with less than 20 jumps each, so they found another DZ that didn’t ask. The “cameraman” attempts to backfly on his non-freefly friendly rental rig to “get the shot” of his buddy, which causes a premature deployment. And then — oh, you’ll love this — his main rips in half, which is promptly followed by a cutaway. I think he’s ready to downsize now! What do you think?

Friday Freakout: Student Cypres Save WITH Instructor… WTF?!!

Aside from this kid looking all sorts of awkward in freefall, this instructor should be fired. There’s no excuse for both a student and an instructor losing altitude awareness. The last alti check seems to be at 0:37 by the student and at, umm, never by the instructor before the student pulls his main and his AAD fires. Anyone who disagrees, I’d like to hear your opinion… but this is f*#%ed up!
