A Mr. Bill with inexperienced jumpers can go wrong really fast — like getting wrapped up in your pilot chute and bridle right out the door. Take notes… don’t do this! I’m sure it sounded like a good idea at the time. What could possibly go wrong?

Imagine jumping out of a pickup truck on the freeway, skidding to a slow grind, just before the rope tethering you to it snaps tight and jolts you to a halt. That’s pretty much what this trooper was feeling as he got hung up on his static line. With lines wrapped around his gear and reserve, there’s no quick fix. The solution? Clipping on another parachute… and that gets a thumbs up. Well done sir, well done.

Friday Freakout: Trapped Altimeter, Hard One-Handed Landing

Some days things just don’t go your way. This poor skydiver was having one of those bad days. First, the freefly tube was spinning him around like a top. Then, his altimeter gets trapped in his risers on deployment. And finally, he steers one-handed and lands super hard in a ditch. In a situation like this, let go of the damn tube — it’s not worth your life! Live and learn people, live and learn.

Friday Freakout: Paratrooper Survives 50-Foot Cutaway!!!

Talk about a close call. This has to be one of the LOWEST cutaways I’ve ever seen. Two paratroopers get wrapped up and one of them chops his main less than 50 feet (give or take) above the ground, and luckily his reserve opens 15 feet before impact. Pardon me while I change my underwear!

Doing CRW (canopy relative work) in clouds probably wasn’t the wisest decision these two skydivers ever made. It’s a bit like doing a low hook turn blindfolded. In fact, thinking about it, that may even be safer.

Talk about bad timing. Deploying your drogue while head down doesn’t seem like a good idea. Something bad might happen, like the drogue wrapping around your foot. At least this TI can sleep soundly at night knowing he didn’t fuck up as badly as this other tandem instructor. I’m sure some of you have an opinion about the videographer trying to help out (in vain). What do you think?

Losing your helmet in freefall is never fun (watch closely at the 0:03 mark). Neither is a canopy collision/wrap immediately after dumping your main. This video is from the good ‘ol days — 1989 — back when, apparently, tracking away at break-off was only a suggestion. Oh well, nice video.
