I totally concur. Bad execution of emergency proceedures with a lucky ending. Apparently opening in clouds without a thorough check of what’s around you was in his training also. And if so little attention is paid during the pack job that an object gets packed inside… one should expect some bad crap to happen eventually.

Are you freaking kidding me? Way to do almost everything wrong and live to tell the tale. OK correct me if I’m wrong, but if you have a PC in tow and you do the correct thing
(which is to cut it away) then if/when it starts to deploy it will fly away and not be there for the reserve to entangle with. Also, nice job grabbing the reserve with your right hand! Who teaches that?

maybe the cutaway main would have completed the reserve deployment like a skyhook, you never know? this is why you should always stow all of you main pc bridle “in the mesh of the pc”, and not later in the pc folds. main pc / bridle – half hitch / entanglements have been happening for decades ever since the hdpc was invented. this is also why tandem drogue bridals are stowed on the mesh prior to folding the drogue, it forces the bridal to be metered out of the pc / drogue “after” the fabric portion begins its ascent, instead of the bridal unfolding and the pc having to fly past or through it.

Back in January I had some kind of PC in tow malfunction myself. My plan has always been to pull my reserve without first cutting away. USPA says whether or not to cutaway is up to you, just make your plan and stick with it, and that’s what I did. Unlike this guy, I had a very quick, soft & on heading reserve opening (God bless PD). But this video, along with a friend’s experience at the last Eloy Nationals, and an incident I personally witnessed in 1978, convince me that chopping your main first is depriving yourself of the canopy that just might SAVE your life. If this guy had chopped first, because “some instructor said so”, he’d have bounced. He LIVED because he kept his main and went straight for his reserve. GOOD JOB !! Ain’t it great to be alive ?!?
